The School District of Mauston provides services for our students who are English Learners as well as their families. When new students enroll in the District, families are asked to complete a home language survey. Information from this survey is used to help the school determine if further screening and possibly services are needed. For more information, please call the District Office at 608-847-5451 or ask in the office at your school.
Home Language Survey
The Home Language Survey is part of the New Student online registration process. There are nine questions on the survey. The English Language Coordinator will contact families when the results of the survey indicate that the student should participate in screening.
Screening for EL Services
The English Language Coordinator will contact families of students who qualify for screening based on their home language survey. Age K5 students will be assessed with the Kindergarten WIDA-ACCESS Placement test. Students enrolling in grades 1-12 will take the WIDA Screener. This is a computer-based assessment. The English Language Coordinator will contact families with the results of the screening and the services that the District can offer the family.
Each winter, English Learners take the ACCESS Test. This test is given over several days and measures reading, speaking, and listening in English. Students receive a score that shows growth each year in gaining English proficiency.
DPI has a family section on its website. This is a link to the family page for English Learners.
