Welcome to Mauston Montessori Charter School

It is with tremendous pride and excitement that I welcome you to Mauston Montessori School! Mauston Montessori is a free public charter school. Our main objective at Mauston Montessori is to provide a carefully planned, stimulating environment which will help students to develop within themselves the foundational habits, attitudes, skills, and ideas essential for a lifetime of creative thinking and learning. Respect and courtesy serve as the foundation for everything we do.

Mauston Montessori provides a dynamic student-centered learning environment that focuses on the development of the whole child. Consistent with the Montessori philosophy, we offer a multi-age curriculum allowing students to develop their skills over a multi-year period. Skills follow a progression; younger students benefit from examples set by the older students and older students benefit from being in a leadership position.

It is our Mission to:

Provide rigorous and engaging academic opportunities that are aligned with real-world experiences.

Students will build the needed confidence to achieve academic excellence and social-emotional learning through a positive, fun, and nurturing environment.

Students and staff embrace a collaborative growth mindset. The exploration of new concepts is encouraged through personalized learning and goal setting. We strive to meet the learning needs of all students through the delivery of differentiated instruction that is inclusive, relevant, and engaging.

We welcome you to stop by and see the amazing learning that is happening at Mauston Montessori School! I’m looking forward to an outstanding year!

Warm Regards,

Jolene Routson
Mauston Montessori Administrator

The Montessori Method

Dr. Maria Montessori characterized the three to six-year-old child as possessing an extraordinary capacity to absorb information from his or her environment – an ability she termed “the absorbent mind.” A young child can learn his or her native language without the formal instruction and conscious effort an adult must make to learn a foreign language. They are like little sponges, using all their senses to soak up information from their environment. The Montessori method of education allows children in this sensitive period to learn to read, write, and calculate in the same natural way they learn to walk and talk.

The mixed-age classroom provides an opportunity for younger children to learn from older peers, while older children learn patience and nurturing as well as gain great satisfaction in teaching a younger child how to complete a “work.” Ideally, the child will then remain with the same teacher in the same classroom for the two-year program, which includes completion of the traditional “kindergarten” year. This allows the child to work at his or her own pace, learning from others along the way, and to finally become the older child who passes on knowledge to the younger children, thereby reinforcing his or her own knowledge and boosting confidence.
