January 16, 2014 was the date of the next Board Facility Study Workshop. At that meeting, the Board briefly reviewed the information received to date, and discussed drafts of possible building and grade-level reconfigurations. The Board shared initial opinions, and questions about the draft options presented. Several factors were mentioned that will impact any future board decisions related to the operation and management of district facilities, including: (1) ongoing reductions in state aid; (2) effective use of space in existing buildings; (3) educational programming and opportunities for students; and (4) the ongoing high costs of maintaining and repairing buildings and equipment, considering the age and use of the buildings.
There was general consensus among the Board members that further information and considerations should be considered, including the possible closing of one or more district buildings. While recognizing that any option adopted will require considerable change for students and staff, as well as remodeling and updating of existing spaces such as heating, food services, storage, etc. The Board directed the district administrators to work with Bray to gather more information about specific requirements and costs related to the three options the Board was most interested in discussing further (Options 4, 5 and 6).
Late in March 2014, Bray representatives met with Superintendent Weymouth, Mauston High School Principal Jim Dillin and Director of Buildings and Grounds Rick Noe to conduct a "walk through" of the high school building.
The Board will meet again to review additional facility study documents, projected enrollments, and ideas from Bray Associates regarding the possible best use of district buildings and classrooms.
Attached below are documents that were presented at the January 2014 Board Facility Study Workshop. The Board of Education and Superintendent Weymouth welcome questions and input from citizens, staff, and parents as they pursue the changes that may be needed in order to continue offering the finest educational opportunities possible to the students in our district.
