It is the philosophy of the School District of Mauston that the needs of most gifted and talented students can be met in the regular classroom with differentiated instruction. Differentiation is responsive instruction that enhances learning and engages all students, including high performance learners, in activities that better respond to their particular learning needs, strengths, and preferences. In addition, the district will provide opportunities for gifted/talented students to exhibit and develop their abilities in programs outside of the regular classroom. The School District of Mauston is a member of the Mississippi Valley Gifted and Talented Network (MVGTN). This network of 30 school districts recognizes the need to provide programming opportunities for gifted and talented students. The activities developed by the network allow talented youth to come together and share their knowledge and expertise while learning new information and developing advanced skills.
The following programs and activities are sponsored by the MVGTN:
fairs to bring students together to share their knowledge and skills in the areas of creativity, social studies, science, and the performing arts
competitions to bring students together to share their reading skills and general intellectual knowledge
activities designed to promote leadership among gifted/talented students
workshops for students on creative writing, career exploration, and computer technology
A handbook outlining the gifted and talented program is available in the district office. If you have questions about the district’s Gifted and Talented program, please contact the Gifted and Talented Coordinator, Greg LaBansky, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 847-4410 ext. 4413.
