It is the philosophy of the School District of Mauston that most gifted and talented students’ needs can be met in the regular classroom with differentiated instruction. Differentiation is responsive instruction that enhances learning and engages all students, including potential high performance learners, in activities that better respond to their particular learning needs, strengths, and preferences. In addition, the District will provide opportunities for gifted/talented students to exhibit and develop their abilities in programs outside of the regular classroom. Parents also have a responsibility to provide enrichment activities outside of the school setting to promote the development of their child’s giftedness.
Differentiation ensures the delivery of a high-level and meaningful curriculum by adjusting the content, process, product, and learning environment for students based on their readiness, interests, and abilities with continual progress monitoring. Additionally, support for the “whole child” will be provided by one or more of the following: guidance, mentoring, and parental involvement.
The School District of Mauston recognizes the need for differentiated alternatives for gifted and talented students to develop skills in inquiry and creative expression at a rate and to an extent appropriate to his/her ability. Recognizing and meeting the needs of gifted and talented students requires flexible and varied educational experiences in order to fully develop their intellectual, academic, creative, artistic, and/or leadership abilities.
